The Anatomy of a Long Distance Moving Quote

Long Distance Moving Company - Moving QuoteAnticipating a long-distance move to Tulsa and Oklahoma City? If so, then of course you will need to make sure that you are obtaining the best rate from your residential long-distance moving company. One of the best ways to lock in the best value on long distance movers is to consider several companies. When reviewing the estimates you receive from various companies, however, there are a few important items you will want to watch out.

1. Estimate Type

Long Distance Moving quotes usually fall into one of these categories:

  • non-binding - the final amount you are charged is based on the actuals (time consumed or distance traveled/totoal weight of the shipment, depending on how the mover bills) required for your move, which could be higher or lower than your beginning estimated amount may have been.
  • not-to-exceed - your total invoice is guaranteed to be equal to or less than the rate quoted.
  • binding - the price you are quoted is the amount you'll pay for your move no matter what.

When receiving quotes, make sure to find out exactly which type of estimate each moving company is providing.

2. Valuation

A lot of professional movers will include a basic amount of insurance coverage to help guard you from monetary loss if any of your things are lost or damaged during transport. The standard rate of coverage is about $0.60 per pound, though this can change from one mover to the next, so make sure to confirm.

You might also be provided the opportunity to buy additional coverage, which may be recommended if you have valuable items being transported. It is a common misunderstanding that customers automatically get full coverage when they engage a moving company, so be sure and discuss coverage before picking a mover.

3. Packing

As a portion of your long-distance moving quote, packing services could also be included if you ask for them. If you're interested in receiving help with your packing, many moving companies offer both partial packing and full packing services. With partial packing, you'll receive professional help with certain things that you have authorized ahead of time. Full packing assistance, alternately, will comprise of complete assistance with all of your packing and most likely even includes supplies (though this can vary). Make sure to check each company's pack count and confirm the correct service level is being quoted for your long-distance move.

4. 3rd Party Services

Make sure and look for exclusions in your moving estimate. For instance, if one moving company quotes appliance relocation service and another company does not, you jump to the conclusion that the second mover is providing the best value or lowest quoted price. In reality, you might be in for an unpleasant surprise when the company shows up and breaks the news that appliance service is additional.

While some moving companies may provide more third-party services than others, it's important to verify with each company and get in writing specifically what's included versus what will be an additional cost.

5. Weight

Finally, it is imperative to understand what the estimated weight is and how accurate it is. If there is a large variance (more than 10%) between the estimated weight and actual weight of a shipment, it is a possibility that the mover mis-quoted or mis-calculated the weight. Be sure you have a good understanding of who will be responsible for the weight difference, should one occur.
